Jesus and Mary Chain vs. Project Runway

Jesus and Mary Chain vs Project RunwayI went to last night's Jesus and Mary Chain show at the Showbox SoDo and I was so surprised by the less than capacity show (although it was GREAT to see all the imaginaries in attendance - hi hi hi!).

My theory why the band that I feel inspired a majority of today's harolded bands didn't sell out the venue?

Last night was also the season premiere of Project Runway.

At my home we went old-school stylee and set the VCR to tape it so we can catch up with the rest of the pop-culture loving country tonight (but don't let that stop you from inserting Project Runway exclamations below). Do you think everyone else just had Project Runway parties to go to and that's why they couldn't make it out to worship the brothers Reid ? Or is it not as cool as I think it is to see JAMC live in 2008? Or was it the steep $30+ tickets?

Furthermore, does anyone else think it's at all kinda weird that JAMC had Psychocandy t-shirts for sale at the show?

Haha, I bought one of those shirts as soon I saw them. It's the coolest thing to wear this summer.

I was also surprised about the attendance... aren't they just MEGA COOL? Regardless, the show kicked ass and I finally got to see one my rock heroes.

I thought it was great. If the show wasn't sold out, you sure couldn't tell that from the front row. The Reid brothers can still work it together like they never stopped. Jim's voice may be a bit coarser and William still can't play without watching his fingers, but they definitely sound better than a lot of reunited bands (Pixies and Police, I'm looking at you.) No, they're not 25 year old bad boys anymore, but that's ok. It was pretty cool that they played a solid long set that included many of their hits including several from Psychocandy. I was dying to hear Never Understand and thought for sure that would be what they played for their encore, but I guess they don't perform that song live now. I wonder why not?

And I'm not sure there's a huge overlap in the Mary Chain and Project Runway audiences. If the show didn't sell out it was probably due to the ticket price. Which I thought was totally reasonable, btw.

Those Psychocandy shirts were great but they only had them in two women's sizes. Bummer, I would have picked one up for sure.

You know...I have to say I wasn't all that impressed. I know, I know - bring on the hate. But really, all we get is a 50-minute set plus a one-song encore? They sounded pretty great, but it all felt pretty rote. And was it just me who noticed how many times Jim Reid was fussing with his nose during the show? Hmmm.

Agreed, I didn't think it was the best J&MC show I've ever seen, but I blame that partly on myself - I think part of my "meh" attitude during the show was that we were in the 21+ part of the back, which made it a lot harder to get immersed in the music...

Second, I worked myself up beforehand about the fact that the last 2x I saw them, it was at an outdoor festival and I didn't know how it would translate for me at an indoor venue...but I don't think I was wrong, it didn't have that to me, although I did still enjoy it...

I blame the low attendance on the fact that the show was very poorly advertised - A lot of people didn't even know it happened until it was over, and a lot of people seemed confused by the dates...plus it was mid-week and the near $40 ticket price probably drove a lot of the kids away...

ps-I watched Project Runway when I got home...

There's a Project Runway/JAMC overlap in my life, but the Jesus show came outta nowhere and I missed it before I even realized it was coming. Psychocandy shirts would've been cool. I'd say it's lame to whore your popular album, but I'd sure as hell buy a Rumors shirt at a Fleetwood Mac show, so...who gives a crap. A good album's a good album.

Project Runway is still good, btw.

I'm waiting for a My Bloody Valentine Seattle show. Is that too much to ask for?

The turnout is due to the some what "last minute" booking with little publicity. People have to more or less know about something to see it ;)

MBV would kill me... I'd love it so much I don't know what I'd do, Jon.
