Grandy at the helm

According to Line Out, Eric Grandy has just stepped up to replace Jonathan Zwickel as music editor.  In my opinion, Grandy's writing is consistently well researched, interesting and informative.  Even when I don't agree with him, I want to hear what he has to say, and his intellectual approach to critique bodes well for a new editorial era at the Stranger.  Earlier this year his year end list included artists such as Adrian Orange, whose release was otherwise largely ignored or scorned; Grandy had the eye and ear to recognize it.

Though I have absolutely no information from the Stranger on Zwickel's abrupt departure, I did catch an "off the record" conversation posted earlier today that vanished shortly thereafter from Line Out's content.  Coincidence?  Who knows.  But I wish him the best as he moves forward - he was never afraid to voice an unpopular opinion, bravely offering it up to the masses.

Best of luck to DJ Fucking in the Streets in his new post.

I can't forgive Grandy for what he's done :( The all-ages community weeps

Wow! That's quite a shock! I like reading Eric - he's a smart writer who knows his shit. I see him out at shows all the time, but we've never met (I did, though, share my Art Brut setlist with him for Bumbershoot), so I think it'll be a good thing for The Stranger. Of course, I wish him all the best.

I wonder what happened with Zwickel. I'm really curious now.

Kiku, Eric actually grew up attending shows at and supporting the Old Firehouse. I can't think of someone who would be a greater advocate for the all ages scene, despite the Atlas debacle. I went to one of the best shows I saw in 2007 at Atlas, but that argument against Grandy has worn out it's welcome. Whether his actions led to the end of something really great [which is debatable], I think he should be able to move past that.

I got the sense that Zwickel didn't quite fit into the Stranger cliques; so maybe it's not surprising that he's out so soon.

Atlas probably would have been shut down anyway. They weren't exactly keeping the place a secret.

Sarah @3: Aw I didn't know that. I only first heard of Eric Grandy because of the Atlas Scandal (before I never really paid attention to the writers of the Stranger), so I had a bad first impression I guess. But if that's true, I retract my statement and apologize :]

Why no promotion for Megan, I wonder?

Hmmm, me too! That girl is all over the place and writes great reviews.
I hope Eric has the sense to not just cover the cap hill beat. That's what his column is usually about...hope it doesn't influence the choice of coverage is what I am saying...

Which Atlas show are you referring to?
