Amy Winehouse wins Record of the Year Grammy

Just a moment ago, I watched as Amy Winehouse was awarded Record of the Year Grammy for "Rehab."  Now, despite her personal problems, there's no denying that Amy made one hell of an album last year, and "Rehab" was one hell of a song.  Watching her performance just now, and also her acceptance speech, I was pretty sure Amy was high as a kite, but as my dear beau said, "If getting her high is what it takes to keep her making such great music, then dammit, hand her the pipe!" (Or something along those lines.)

So who else saw this performance and/or acceptance speech, and what's your take??

I tend not to pay attention to the Grammys, mostly because they do things like give "Best Electronic/Dance Album" award to the Chemical Brothers' We Are the Night.

You know I'm gonna give that a big W00t!!!

But really, I'm more curious about this beau of yours...

Oh yeah, and with nothing much on the new release slate for this week, Amy will be #1 in the U.S. very soon.

Amy's just coming up here on the West Coast!

But I was blown away by Kanye West's performance!! I mean, at first I was a little offended that he took a Daft Punk song, but it was actually really incredible! The effects were amazing, the whole orchestra lighting up and everything! Plus the creepy robots in the back (were they Daft Punk? I couldn't figure it out)

What's up with Amy not knowing the lyrics to her two most famous songs and having to read the lines from the teleprompter?

I didn't get to see any of the Grammys, but I am a little sad that I missed Kanye and Daft Punk, esp. since it was Daft Punk's first ever appearance on television. I'm sure it'll be on YouTube shortly, if it isn't already.

But don't feel too bad for me. I missed it because I had to work. And by work I mean going to the DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist show.

UPDATE: Kanye and Daft Punk at the Grammys was AWESOME!

Heh, I tuned in late and missed Kanye (thanks to ChrisB, I'm watching now), but I did catch Vince Gill's acceptance speech, after his Best Country Somethingorother win was announced by Ringo Starr, in which Gill said "I just got a Grammy from a Beatle. Has that happened to you, Kanye?"
It was pretty funny.

I do love "Stronger" but am I the only person who thinks that Kanye isn't that great as a rapper? He's killer as a producer, but rapper ... hmmm ...

I've watched way too many Grammy presentations over the years, because while I agree with Erik that their logic is often questionable, I still can't look away. Last night's show was one of the stronger ones, performance-wise. They clearly put a lot of effort into wrapping a huge amount of talent into the Staples Center to commemorate 50 years. That said, some highs (Amy W? Out of her skull!) and lows:

-Kanye and Daft Punk: Yeah, it was cool to finally see the French robots on tv. But I really think Kanye's overrated. Erik, again I agree with you: He's got mad-skills at producing, but he should stay *behind* the booth.

-Foo Fighters: Can someone please explain to me how they're mega-huge, but they always sound like crap live? I've never heard Dave G. actually sound good in a live performance. It makes me speculate.

-I have to admit while I'm not a huge fan of the music, I can't deny the power of voices behind both Josh Groban nor Andrea Bocelli.

-Best Collaboration with Vocals: I didn't see the award handed out, but just read that Robert Plant/Allison Krauss took that home. Amen! That record is gorgeous.

-Swore I read that both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder were supposed to perform the songs that had them up for best original track from a movie/television show, but I saw neither performance. Maybe they axed 'em? Too bad the track from "Dreamgirls" won. I swear it's from at least 2 years ago...!

-Amy Winehouse scares me. What the hell was up with that acceptance speech?

-Herbie Hancock winning Album of the Year sent me over the moon. Complete shock when pitted against powerhouses like Winehouse and Kanye. It's about time some recognition was given to a jazz album in that category.

oh, update from the headlines:
Natalie Cole: Amy's Wins Send a 'Bad Message'

"I don't think she should have won. I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together," said Cole, 58. "We have to stop rewarding bad behavior."

Of Winehouse, 24, who is currently in rehab in England, Cole says: "I'm sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together."

Watching Amy Winehouse's herky-jerky movements during the performance, it reminds me of a character being terrorized by a voodoo doll in a movie. Or as if she's being controlled by a robotic remote. Or the crack-heads down on 3rd and Pike/Pine.

(Sorry Dana!)

You guys say she actually went to rehab now though? Does that mean she needs to change the lyrics?

She's never been much of a dancer... but her reaction when she won literally made me tear up. She looks so stunned and thrilled; I wonder if it will inspire her to change her troubled ways?

yes, because more fame is always the route to healthy behavior ;)

i do not watch the grammys & it's been a long time since winning one was a valid barometer of anything more than a combination of album sales & industry navel-gazing
