What's your playlist like these days?
Submitted by Imaginary Shrie on August 18, 2008.I just spent a week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with my family and fiance. Survivng a whole day of plane rides and some tedius connection flights was only possible through the use of my trusty friend and confidant, the iPod.
It's always interesting to hear what other people are listening to on their iPods, record players, car stereos and office computers. My playlist says a lot about the mood I'm in, and if my mood is less than satisfactory, the mood I'd like to be in. So here is a taste of what's been keeping my ears occupied and my mind sane lately:
- Brian Eno: Here Come The Warm Jets
- Hawnay Troof: Islands of Ayle
- Colonies: Sleep Patterns
- Apples In Stereo: New Magnetic Wonder
- Komeda: What Makes It Go?
- Mates of State: Rearrange Us
What have YOU been listening to lately? And what does it say about your mood and mind?

Kyle, I love Flying Lotus. I also dig the Delfonics. Don't think I've listened to the rest of that much.

Weird, I've been listening to a ton of GangStarr all Summer too! Mass Appeal is the main ringer on my phone right now I've been so addicted. It's been a kind of lame summer for new music actually...bring on the Fall rush.

In honor of todays change in weather, I have been listening to old and new music from The National. Something about their music and rainy Seattle days seem to go together perfectly!
Imaginary Shrie said on August 18, 2008:
Agreed indiesha. His voice is captivating. I also have to say that the new Byrne/Eno thing is addicting.. for me anyway. But I LOVE Eno.
Oh and Hercules and Love Affair. Love.

The Eames Era's latest CD has made its way to the top of my Summer 2008 playlist. I walk to the bus stop pretty frequently in the summer (it's about a two mile walk) and theirs is one of those CDs that can make you feel like you're in a movie while you walk, or just make you appreciate all the scenery around you.

I thought had been listening to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, but it turns out I just left a couple microphones in front of my speakers.

if my record player was around lou rawls and nancy wilson would be in the mix.
i'm in a very formless, lyrical mood. meaning if there has to be lyrics in the song, let the song go somewhere. i'm feeling car music. journey music.

i've also been listening to my "winter in NY" playlists a lot, oddly enough -- haven't been too in the mood for the requisite summer tunes this year..

last week, when it was hot, my playlist looked something like this:
abe vigoda- "skeleton"
vivian girls- "such a joke"
no age- "ripped knees"
pavement- "pueblo"
cave singers- "cold eye"
the walkmen- "the blue route"
(their new album = SO GOOD)
silver jews- "buckingham rabbit"
(actually, i've listened to "american water" front-to-back at least twice a day for the past two months)
today, since it was sort of gloomy, it looked like this:
ghostface killah- "mighty healthy"
luke temple- "blue britches"
tiny vipers- "aron"
emily haines- "reading in bed"
raekwon- "north star (jewelz)"
sera cahoone- "long highway"
atlas sound- "without headlights"
(and, just to kick me out of a gloomy mood) modest mouse- "steam engenius"

Douglas, I agree. It's a sleeper, but it grows on me more and more.
Tiny Vipers sounds like an excellent pick for today, and this gloomy week actually. I second the Silver Jews amazement and the obsession of "American Water". That album is ALWAYS on my playlist ;)

I just put in the new Sleeping in the Aviary album and it A-MAZ-ING! It releases Oct 14th - so there's plenty of time for us to yammer about it more.
Also, I can't seem to get over Jerad Mees (it's more than just PDX lo fi singer radness). He sent us two records and I've been listening to both of those ova and ova.
I also love that my dayjob itunes seamlessly goes from Los Campesinos to Los Halos.

This summer, it's been all about ELO and Steely Dan. I can't quite move past those, despite that it's turned to grey and rain here in Sea-town the last couple days.

New Sleeping in the Aviary?!?! WOOT WOOT!!! That is music to my ears...
Chris Estey said on August 20, 2008:
Ah, Stella, I had a month of non-stop ELO and Steely Dan a few months ago. For some reason last winter-spring seemed perfect for them for me. Thank God for dollar bins and swallowing your punk rock snobbery to enjoy the sublime pleasures of intelligently crafted pop.
douglas martin said on August 20, 2008:
shrie, i totally agree. "american water" is one of my all-time favorites, and probably my absolute favorite. the joos are playing neumo's on october 2nd (which, coincidentally, happens to be my birthday). words can't express how excited i am.
also, i love listening to tiny vipers on rainy days. sometimes, i throw "hands across the void" on repeat and fall asleep to it.

Since I'm currently visiting family in the Midwest, I've had an opportunity to hear a lot of mainstream music I'd missed out on. Like Paramore. Wow. They suck.
The playlist I'm throwing together for tomorrow's flight back to civilization includes The Dead Trees, the new High Places, The Smiths' Meat Is Murder, and some Elvis Costello. I need some more, though, so I'm stealing some suggestions from your comments. Thanks! ;)
Imaginary Shrie said on August 20, 2008:
Douglas, I know! I can't wait to see the Joos. I saw them at Showbox last year and that made me happy in the pants. Ahhh... Berman.

I'm an indie blogger who has denounced indie:
The Byrds - "Notorious Byrd Brothers"
Graham Nash - "Songs for Beginners"
CSN - Anthology
Joni Mitchell - "Blue"
The Turles - "Happy Together", "...The Battle of the Bands"
King Crimson - "Red"
Bob Dylan - "Highway 51"
Jefferson Airplane - "Volunteers"
America - "History"
...my zest for indie has taken a nosedive. Not that there's nothing good out now, I'm just off on another journey. Don't know when I'll be back...
Besides even my favorite stuff out this year sounds like something pumped out 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago: M83, Coldplay, Fleet Foxes...
