A strange missive just hit my imaginary inbox: An announcement of a Kurt Cobain tribute show, September 13th, at the 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam. What's strange is the relative disconnect between the show date and Cobain himself. That date is neither the artist's birth nor death day.

Frankly I have never really known of a reason to go to Hoquiam save for passing through on the way to the surf at Westport. But this is intriguing me. Schoolyard Heroes and Harvey Danger are on the bill, as are Black top Demon and Gebular (both somewhat hailing from Aberdeen), and each band is supposed to play at least one Nirvana song.

All proceeds from the show go to the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee, "a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to memorializing Cobain in his hometown of Aberdeen, WA."

Apparently this committee is the group responsible for the "Come As You Are" attachment to the "Welcome to Aberdeen" sign. Their website is cryptic as to what they're up to next. Personally, I'd love to see something like a mini Nirvana museum or something similar installed in the sleepy former lumber town that Cobain used to call home -- something to draw a bit of business to the place. Or a fancy Cobain statue erected on the streets, ala the Hendrix one on Cap Hill.
