Jeff Mangum spotted at the 40 Watt, something magical *might* happen tonight at the Athens PopFest

Our imaginary reporter Keenan is at the Athens Popfest (recaps coming soon) and she just emailed me this:

Subject: Something crazy is going to happen

at the 40 watt, jeff magnum is in the building. I'm emailing you from my phone. internet and computer access has sucked, but photos, videos, and reviews will be up tomorrow. i'll keep you posted tonight on what ends up happening.

Mike Turner (who puts the fabulous fest together) told us "something special" was going to happen -- could this be it!??!

Keenan checked in --- sounds like Jeff M didn't take the stage, but after the big finale show, the fun didn't stop there.

About 300 indie-pop kids from the show followed Julian Koster (of the Music Tapes and Jeff's bandmate in Neutral Milk Hotel) as he led them from the 40 Watt about a half mile away in a kazoo parade (I think where they played the same four notes for 20 minutes). Eventually it morphed into a game of tag with bells and blindfolds -- basically a game of blindfold hot potato tag. I'm not sure if Jeff M was one of the blindfolded tag-ers - but sounds like the evening still ended up being pretty memorable (even if there wasn't a debuting of new songs).

Thanks so much for checking in Keenan! We can't wait to read all about the shows.

I saw NMH at the croc in like late '98 early '99. Pretty much changed my life. Anyway, if Mr. Magnum could please do just one last project of somesort, then, I can die!

That kazoo parade was insane, but I didn't stick around for the game. Popfest was much fun!
