Coach me through Coachella
Submitted by Jeanine Anderson on April 19, 2008.Coachella Music Festival starts up on Friday in Indio, CA and the line up is fucking rad. The schedule of who/when/where isn't published yet but I know I'll be trotting from stage to tent to stage to tent trying to fit in as much as possible.
With more than 125 performances over three days, one has to be selective yet open to new discoveries. I need your help! Who would you see? Who is on your must-not-miss list? Who are the potential 2008 breakouts?
Here's the lineup. Check it and comment with your recommendations.
At the top of my list: Midnight Juggernauts. These guys opened for Justice in NYC last fall and sounded fab. That was their first show in the US and I'm looking forward to seeing how they've matured in the last six months.
Also interesting are: Goldfrapp, Aphex Twin, Hot Chip, Autolux, Holy Fuck, The Raconteurs, Battles, Aesop Rock, MGMT, Perry Farrell (here's a crazy wish: a surprise Jane's Addiction performance, ha!), and scads of others. Our own Death Cab for Cutei is on the lineup this year, too.
Who would you see?
p.s. I'm still trying to track down two VIP passes: they get you into the section with misters, couches, shade, and adult beverages. Craigslist LA has a bunch of stupid scammers. Bleh. Any of you have a hookup?

oh, and the $600 that people are asking for VIP wristbands is approximately face value if I remember correctly from the American Express presale.

You have to see Aphex Twin. He NEVER tours. Sure, he'll probably lay on a couch and look through a Playboy and squarepush every now and then while something bizarre like dancing neon-colored bears simulate sex on stage but it'll be worth it.

To your list, I'd add the Breeders, Les Savy Fav (crazy man-beast Tim Harrington), Man Man (also nuts and very fun), Carbon/Silicon (Mick Jones has still got it), and the Shout Out Louds.

Josh, if you get offered two photo passes, throw one my way, will ya? :) We can have a little friendly competition within the seattle contingency.
p.s. I'm really bad at recognizing people, so if you see me, say "hi!"

my list of must-sees are:
aphex twin
kraftwerk
animal collective
cut copy
holy fuck
santogold
les savy fav
last year hot chip fucking killed it at coachella, and so i think i'll see them again. also, prince should be interesting. but, as far as break-out acts go, i think santogold might be the one to catch.

The one thing Coachella has over all the other festivals is thier electronic lineup and this year is no different. Your chances to see Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, and Booka Shade are few and far between so you can't miss that oppurtunity. And My Morning Jacket live is a thing of beauty.
Still angry that Radiohead aren't on this bill!!! Stupid All Points West.

Also no Rilo Kiley. Never, EVER ever Rilo Kiley. If you go see Rilo Kiley, I might not speak to you for a while.

I'm not going to make any recommendations but Stereogum has the schedule up now, if you haven't seen it yet.

I would say if Bonnie @ 8 and I were hanging out on Friday night of the fest, I would have very little complaint. In fact, I would be pretty damn happy.

Update:
My sorry-ass plea for VIP wristbands paid off - - somewhat. I now have Friday and Sunday covered. Crazy Prince fans are snapping up all the pit passes VIP wristbands for Saturday.

You've already listed most of my top picks; although I'll probably also try to see some of Prince and M.I.A., because when else would I ever see them but Coachella? There's also Islands, Rilo Kiley, Battles, Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, Vampire Weekend. It's going to be a busy three days!
FWIW, everyone can get into a section with adult beverages. The VIP section is slightly nicer, but I don't know that it's worth giving in to LA scammers. Just find some shade, drink plenty of water, and have fun! Maybe I'll see you there.
(BTW, if someone happens to have a hookup for a photo pass, give me a call.)
