Billboard Top 100... I've heard of maybe ten of these people

After reading an interesting piece about Radiohead's plan for touring on Billboard.com, I clicked on a link to the Billboard Top 100 whose "hottest" track this week is something called "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy Tell'em. Apparently, this has been the hottest song for the last six weeks.

I've never in my life heard of Soulja Boy, nor have I heard of Colbie Calliat (#5) or J. Holiday (#8). Am I missing anything here, or should I go back under my (indie) rock?

I'm sure you've heard of the new #1 album in the land, Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus". If anything, Kid is modest. To think, this is Kid Rock's first #1 album! Otherwise, we have a lot of Christman-prep greatest hits collections and parent-friendly folks coming out with albums (Josh Groban and Leann Rhimes anyone?)

Band of Horses did enter at #35 with Cease to Begin but beyond that, its all a big yawn to me.

Who's Billboard?

Billboard: the trade magazine that is the mother of all Top 40 song charts and Top album charts. Where all that insidious Soundscan data that they collect when you buy albums go to be compiled and printed.

Maybe this is a bit ironic since we're an "indie-pop" press outlet, but ever since I stopped having a TV and reading popular culture mags, TIG is my only real source of mainstream information, through blogs like this.

Perhaps Band of Horses was boosted due to swilling the WalMarche? One would think that support of the largest global retailer would merit at least a top 20 entry. http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/node/6662
