The Sea Navy covers BOAT's "Last Cans of Paint," your chance to enter the "Cover a BOAT song" contest are rapidly dwindling
Submitted by imaginary dana on November 12, 2007.As avid imagi-blog readers are aware, Seattle lo-fi pop band BOAT haveĀ been hostingĀ a "cover a BOAT song" contest of sorts on their website for the past almost month. Your days to enter are twindling -- the deadline is this Thursday, November 15th!
The latest submission is from another local Seattle band, the Sea Navy. It's quite nice! Here's what the BOATs had to say about it
This is the Sea Navy's Jay Cox playing a gentle twangy version of "Last Cans of Paint" from the Songs That You Might Not Like LP.
Jay gets extra points for his liberal use of tremolo. This cover is perfect to listen to while drinking hot cider in a Seattle windstorm, maybe even a Tacoma windstorm.
Yes....the month of covers deadline is Thursday. We have received 6 covers in a matter of 24 hours here at BOAT HQ. Last minute covers indeed!

Eek I have to do this soon! But I'm a little afraid to be judged by janilicious :o

Kiku!! Fear no judgment - I can't wait to hear your song! :)

KIKU @2: As long as your version of the song you record isn't as dismal as that, I think you'll be fine. Are you a Boat fan? If so, you have to agree that version is flat and uninspired.

I don't really think it can be considered a contest, I think it's just for fun. I hate contests. But I like BOAT!

Janilicious @ 4: Actually I didn't listen, because well I have dial-up, ha! But I am a BOAT fan, however not an extremely musically talented one. Maybe I'll just leave the covers to the experts...

I think that it would be a shame if Kiku didn't cover a BOAT song because of Janilicious. I like the Sea Navy cover. They have a completely different take on the song. Plus, no one else likes "Base the Money on the Children."

I'm working on it as we speak dee krain ! I hope you don't mind a little 8-bit flavoring?
thanks for everything :]

I don't know who Jay Cox or the Sea Navy are but this bites ass! Liberal use of tremolo? More like liberal use of awful. Note To Self: "never buy a Sea Navy cd or attend a Sea Navy concert". Jay, I hope you're not serious about this music thing. You could always try mountain biking.

I really like this song. It's so different. dee kraine is right, covers should be different otherwise what's the point? I love how mystical they made it...

Kiku - I can't wait to hear you 8-bit magic. ElectroKiku will be great!

Woah! #10 is not me. I'm sure there's another Levi out there (who apparently is not fond of the Sea Navy), but being as I'm the one that's posted here a few times in the past (and Jay is a friend), I just wanted to clarify. Not me.
imaginary dana said on November 14, 2007:
@Levi at 13 -- I thought Levi @10 seemed awfully harsh to be you. :)
And Kiku -- never let comment spammers stop you from doing anything you wanna do. As much as I heart Janilicious on our blog and welcome her input, I'd hate to think it would inhibit your creativity in any way. Go forth and record!!!!!
And I like what the Sea Navy did with the song. So... yeah, you're never gonna please everyone. Unless your're Radiohead and you give your music away for free. Even then, I'm sure we could find some haters.

This is a favorite Boat song of mine. This guy butchered it. People should hear the original and not judge the song based on this version.
