Tonight in Seattle:

Recommended show: The Brunettes w/Throw Me the Statue & Nurses tonight at The Vera Project

Okay, guys. Here’s the thing: I am writing this recommendation based solely on my love for The Brunettes. We’ve mentioned Throw Me the Statue here on TIG a few times before and I’m sure they’re a mighty fine band, and uh, Nurses sound great too, but my point is – GO. SEE. THE. BRUNETTES. They’re an adorable band from New Zealand and they are chock-full of great lyrics and fun, poppy goodness.

Seriously. Exhibit A:
The Brunettes

Exhibit B:

The first time I saw The Brunettes, they were opening for Rilo Kiley and I fell for them instantly. At that time they had 6 members playing various instruments. The last time I saw them was at the (old) Croc, and it was a much smaller crew (friends tour with the two leads, Jonathan & Heather, on-and-off to form up to a 6-piece band). Their harmonies are brilliant, Jonathan plays guitar admirably, and Heather plays everything from the keyboard to the harmonica to a glockenspiel to the CLARINET. The clarinet, people!

The only reason I won’t be there is because I already have a ticket to see Wicked. Damnit.

{Head down The Vera Project at 7:30pm tonight (9/22/09) to see them! $10 at the door, $9 advance - you can buy tix online here. Photo taken from the band’s MySpace page, credit: photo by Francis Martin}

I was there last night and I can back you up that they were pretty good. The Kiwi accents won me over pretty fast though. It made me want to start quoting Flight of the Conchords. But considering I went to the show for Nurses and Throw me the Statue, I was pleased to find myself enjoying the middle act too!

So now Aime (or anyone else for that matter) maybe you can help me out. What album do I start on? They had like 3 for sale, and in hindsight I kind of wish I would have just rolled the dice and bought one, but with some bands you never know-some albums are so-so and some are awesome. Suggestions for the next time I'm at the record store?
John
I'd start with Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks or Mars Loves Venus if you can find them - their last one, Structure and Cosmetics is also really good, but I am in love with "Dancefloor", "The Moon in June Stuff", "End of the Runway", "These Things Take Time", and my favorite: "Loopy Loopy Love". Uh yeah. Basically I love everything they do and could talk about them for hours and hours. :)
Oh they definitely played "Loopy Loopy Love" and it sounded just as sweet and poppy as the name would imply. I'll keep my eye out for those albums the next time I'm ravaging through Easy Street. Thanks Amie.

John
