Tonight in Seattle:

Bumbershoot check-in and open thread, Day one

I snuck away from Bumbershoot for a bit to run back home to my Belltown apartment forĀ a quick break from the insanity and crowds.

Let's use this as the place to talk about the first day of Bumbershoot. So spill it. I'll even go first.

The first thing I went to was the "F is for Food" panel with Tom Douglas and Kathleen Flinn. Both had a lot to say about food and eating and had a really relaxed and funny rapport. Douglas was the most quotable, saying that people could become "50% better cooks by just learning how to buy food". When responding to Flinn's comment about loving roast chicken, he noted that "a roast chicken in Paris is much different from a roast chicken from the Costco in Lynnwood."

The biggest laugh, though, came from Flinn's reading of an entry in the "Food for Thought" contest where someone wrote their story of trying to become vegan for a whole hour.

After that, I went to the Main Stage to catch Katy Perry's set, which was as equally great and terrible as I expected.

Perry was complaining on Twitter this morning of being exhausted and it appeared as though she didn't even want to play this show. Her cover of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" was a bad karaoke performance but she does have a big voice and brought a lot of energy to her show. Her voice, which sounded strained at the beginning of her set, grew stronger throughout the 50 minutes she played for.

What have you seen?

De La Soul was the slight victor in a solid night of bands (Old 97's, Long Winters, Kay Kay, even World Party).
The Whore Moans and De La were a dead heat for me. The Whore Moans are SO FUN, and De La were as tight as they ever were. I have officially fallen in love with Akimbo. They're noisy, but incredibly talented. The teen boys in front of me desperately needed a bath, though.
I greatly enjoyed perusing the Seattle/Moscow poster show, contemplated purchasing 1,000 things at Flatstock (realizing I had neither the funds nor the room), saw Natalie Portman's Shaved Head rock it from the beer garden, visited another beer garden by the skate ramp - where my brain fell out of my head at the skaters & bikers dare-deviling it up - found a Trojan-sponsored "safe-sex virtual roller coaster", spied the INSANE line for The Benson Interruption (a BShoot worker was standing there with a sign saying SOLD OUT and yelling to people that there was no way they were going to get in), ate way too much junk and became severely depressed at Charlyne Yi's cancellation. In short - loads of fun, but Bumbershoot chewed me up and spit me out, and I'm kinda glad I'm in for today. :)
"Charlyne Yi's cancellation" say what? How about Sunday / Monday???
"Charlyne Yi's cancellation" all three days "due to food poisoning" said staff. "Not here though."
