Tonight in Seattle:

Let's talk about summer songs on KUOW today {from 9a-10a}

the summer in live music

If you're near a radio or computer this morning, tune into KUOW, 94.9 FM from 9a-10a!

Listen to KUOW today!

I'm slightly nervous but really excited to join Seattle tastemakers Larry Mizell Jr. of The Stranger and Josh Powell, Vera Project Programming Co-Director in the sure-to-be-lively discussion about the songs and festivals of summer 2009.  To prepare, I've gathered a couple of my favorite summer 2009 songs to add to the mix (if there's time) and I've got two huge mugs of tea brewing.

Call in and let us know your thoughts on what you're going to go see and what your summer soundtrack song is! The phone number is 206.543.KUOW (800.289.KUOW). For those outside of Seattle, you can listen online.

Go Liz GO! I can't listen in because I'm at Ye Old Dayjob -- but I sure hope they will make this available from the website 'cause I want to hear it.
I want a HAMM JAMM SANDWICH!
Liz, you mentioned a song on the air this morning - stay flying or something - I think it was your first summer song recommendation. I loved it but can't find it online. Help!
Rebecca @ 3: I couldn't listen (like Dana it's ye ole day job) but I am 99.999% positive the song is "The Hott Chord Is Struck" by Still Flyin. Right now, that's the best I can do.
Yep ChrisB! You got it! It's Still Flyin' and I'm so glad you all agree it rocks! To Rebecca's defense, I might have said Stay Flyin since that is how I daydream my first meeting with them will end. I'll say "See you later" they say in unison "Stay Flyin'". Or maybe my southern drawl kicked in. Regardless of how it sounded on the radio coming out of my mouth, it's Stay Flyin' and that is totally the song of my summer. AND you can go download it for free!

(although if you like that song, buying the whole album would be a safe bet).

I also played:
K.I.S.S.I.N.G. by U.S.E. - I was going to play "All the World" (both songs being from their upcoming release LOVEWORLD) -- but then ChrisB pointed out this one and I agree, totally summer 2009 material.

"Sunshinin" by Cancer Rising - This is a blast from the recent past - and another excellent ChrisB recommendation. Playing it before the other ones I picked out worked out perfectly (with being able to get the inside scoop on the song from CR master himself Larry Mizell Jr. who was sitting across the table from me).

The songs I wanted to play but we didn't have time for (so you should go play them now to kick summer into high gear:
  • "Northern California" by Police Teeth (not necessarily safe for radio - but killer summer roadtrip song)
  • "But We Always Set Up On The Floor" by No-Fi Soul Rebellion
  • "Now We Can See" by The Thermals
  • "I See A Brightness" by Lacrosse
  • "Give It A Chance" by Coulter
  • "Pop Chart by Tiny Masters Of Today
  • "Corner Store Girls by Tea Cozies
  • "All The Other Animals" by Skeletons With Flesh On Them
Thanks to everyone who listened!

(it's the July 17th show)

Now let's talk about what songs make YOU think of SUMMER 2009!
Wow!!! Me (and likely my entire office staff) thank you for adding some fun new selectinos to my summertime tunes list.
I missed it too! (stupid day jobs), but I am positive you were FABULOUS. I need more coffee before I can add Summer 2009 songs. Yes, at 2:45pm. What.
I managed to catch a good amount of it and i really liked your picks. Still Flyin' and HAMMJAMM made my morning at my day job in a room without windows on a gorgeous day... Also, the callers were cracking me up. Way to go!
