Tonight in Seattle:

Sign up to have Bernard Sumner('s people) email you the new Bad Lieutenant single

Bad Lieutenant, the new band formed by frontman Bernard Sumner (Joy Division, New Order), guest drummer Stephen Morris (Joy Division, New Order), guitarist Phil Cunningham (New Order), and guest Alex James (Blur) has released "Sink or Swim," the first single off of Never Cry Another Tear on their MySpace page.

The song will be made available as a free download beginning August 28th and if you sign up as a member of the Bad Lieutenant mailing list at www.badlieutenant.net, you will receive the track as part of a mass mailing. The download will only be available for a limited time, and the album will not be released until October, so act quickly if you like it and you want continued access to it.

"Sink or Swim" is remniscent of 90's era New Order (ala "Crystal," "Regret," etc...), but without the teeth. Sumner addresses the similarity in an interview where he was quoted as saying “There is some continuity to the music I’ve made in the past, but this is very different – because different people are playing on it." The track itself feels familiar and though it is good, but one can't help but wish for Hooky's basslines to make it great. Lyrically, Sumner is not at his best, vaguely reminicent of the uninspired "Hey Now, What You Doing?" but the catchiness of the music cancels it out to a degree. All in all, it gives hope that Never Cry Another Tear will, if nothing else, give all of us Factory / Madchester geeks more Bernard Summner to obsess over for better or for worse.

Did you know that Jonathan Demme directed the 10 minute version of "The Perfect Kiss?" (above). If you didn't, now you know, and knowing's half the battle. Go Bernard!

Ha, I like that quote. Basically saying "yeah, it sounds like New Order, but it's different because it has Alex James instead of Peter Hook."
I have been all about the Alex James since I read his autobio A Bit of a Blur a month or so ago. It was amazing - my favorite book in a long time -- if not of all time (yes, I love it more High Fidelity). Now that I know he's doing this BL thing with his time, I'm all about it.
@ John in Ballard- I loved that comment too. It's kind of a big "DUH" statement. I am really hoping that this album will can be its own beast without sounding quite so much like Hook needs to be there. It's a big hole in the sound in a way- kinda hard to get past, actually. Hooky's stuff with Freebass is pretty good, as is his DJ stuff, though, so one can still get a fix. That man can slap some serious bass! @ Liz- I am hoping that Alex James can bring something new and cool to BL. He has great chops :) I need to check out this A Bit of Blur- I would LOVE to know what Damon Albarn has to say about it. I can imagine it being pretty intense.
I got aBoaBlur from the library - but I am thinking about buying my own copy so that I can highlight all the parts that make me giddy with happiness - and so I can loan out to friends b/c it's so rad. Blur is one of my favorite bands, but I think that any indiekid can enjoy is fame/champagne missives. I don't think Damon could be too upset about it. He calls himself out as a jerk more than he points /wags the finger.
It's true. It's one of his better attributes. He was HILARIOUS in Live Forever. He handled the Oasis rivalry questions like a pro.
The ablum is going to be great and the new single Sink or Swim is very good also, anything that Bernard Sumner touches gold, but one thing that is bothering me so much is the album artwork, New Order and anything related to their music comes with great artwork but the album cover for the new Bad Lieutenant album Never Cry Another Tear is totally unacceptable, anyone can make this in their home it requires no talent, I don' think they took any time or interest to design the sleeve , it is just a BLACK & WHITE cover with a scribble, VERY VERY VERY UNACCEPTABLE, I hope you take your time to change the album cover with some art and color, here is the link so you can see it for yourself. http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/11105910/Never-Cry-Another-Tear/Product.html http://www.amazon.com/Never-Cry-Another-Tear-Lieutenant/dp/B002IN81J4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1251977825&sr=8-1
