The Imaginary Zine is a 60-page old school printed zine recounting our first 10 years with some of our favorite blog posts and stories from our imaginary friends. It is extemely limited with only 333 handcrafted zines made.
It also includes a cd chock full of rare, live, or exclusive songs by some of our favorite local artists, including The Long Winters, BOAT, Tullycraft, Exohxo, Tennis Pro, Math & Physics Club and many more!
The Redwood Plan celebrated the release of their second album, Green Light Go, at Neumos on February 15. Adding electronic elements to their dance-punk sound, Green Light Go is more textured, more dynamic, and if it’s even possible, more energetic and fun than their debut Racing Toward the Heartbreak. We were lucky enough to chat with their powerhouse front-woman Lesli Wood before the band took off on a Midwestern tour to support the new album.
TIG: How was the CD release show at Neumos?
Lesli: It was a little overly ambitious to try to have our CD release show there, but we worked really hard, and of course having Head Like a Kite on the bill made a big difference because they’re a headlining band. Everything just came together really well, and everyone was super responsive. I spent the weekend completely elated.
TIG: Do you DIY everything?
Lesli: I brought on Riot Act Media for publicity on this album. It gave me a chance to focus more on tour booking. Otherwise, everything is completely “do it myself.”
TIG: Beside the electronic element, was there anything else you approached differently on the new album?
Lesli: With the first album we didn’t really know what our sound was going to be. Over the years, everyone created their own distinct voice in the band. Syd, the guitarist, has a very distinct guitar style, and Betty is a machine on the drums, and Larry is this amazing Mike Watt-style bassist. Incorporating all the electronics, I was writing a lot of parts on my own and hadn’t really left a lot of room for individual voices. That was something for me to learn, not just psychologically giving everyone space, but actually making room within the song for another bass line. The songs ended up really showcasing everyone’s individual sounds to create what is now the Redwood Plan.
Anything that Lesli Wood touches is gold, and with her band, The Redwood Plan, she cements that she's a Seattle rock force to be reckoned with. The Redwood Plan's new album, Green Light Go, released on February 12th, and on it, Lesli promises a bigger and more dynamic TRP. Her vocals can seemlessly veer from raucous riot grrl to vulnerable sorrow, soaking your heart with each stab of her pen stroke and guitar lick.
The Green Light Go record release show is this Friday, February 15th at Neumos. Don't leave without your copy of the new album since you will likely be adding this to your likely possibly concrete list of favorite albums of 2013 as well.

Every year I tell you guys to get tickets to Jenny George's annual Dancing on the Valentine benefit show, and every year you listen to me, so I figure there's no reason to stop now! In case you haven't heard of DOTV before (what!), the fabulous Ms. Jenny George, a survivor of Leukemia, decided to start this benefit 8 years ago to give back to the organization that provides support to cancer patients, and is working hard to find a cure. The benefit has grown each year to raise more money for LLS, and this year DOTV is hoping to raise at least $10,000 to beat the hell out of last year's record-breaking $7,000+!
The 2013 show features local bands covering the music of The Cure at Neumos on Saturday, 2/9, with all proceeds from ticket sales and raffles going to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The line-up is FIERCE this year, with Adra Boo, Daniel G. It’s probably impossible that you haven’t heard Lesli Wood sing, either from her awesome Ms. Led days, or covering songs for Jenny George’s annual Dancing on the Valentine benefit, or fronting her kick-ass band The Redwood Plan.
It also goes without saying that the imaginary girls LOVE the heck out of Ms. Wood, and are beyond thrilled that she’s agreed to sing at our Imaginary Holiday Spectacular this Friday! (that’s the 21st, people! SO CLOSE!) Every time she takes the stage, I’m personally blown away by her powerhouse vocals and amazing presence. Hell, sometimes when I see her out and about in Seattle I’m too awe-struck to say “Hi” because I’m rendered unable by my starstruck fandom.
I can’t imagine anyone NOT loving Lesli Wood, and I’m so looking forward to seeing her play on Friday. You’re coming too, right?

Seriously, people. How can you not love the Young Evils? On top of playing great shows and just generally being awesome, they've been building up some great press lately -- even moreso than usual -- like the recent recommendation in Paste magazine as an upcoming Seattle band to watch, for example. The band is making good on that bet with the release of their newest track, "Darker Blue Bayou," which is off of their forthcoming EP Foreign Spells -- and while we haven't gotten our hands on the whole EP yet, we're pretty damn sure that we're in for something good. Perhaps even a contender for our best-of lists for 2012.
Even way back in November, the new material was sounding brilliant -- and to prove it, here's a snippet we typed up after the show they played that blew us away at the Rendezvous, (coincidentally enough, with a nod to the newly released track):
While we're still in hearts for everything we know and love off of Enchanted Chapel, we've got to say -- this performance, and particularly the newer songs we heard in the set, made us giddy with joy to hear what's next so far as studio efforts go from the Young Evils camp. With a solid lineup finally in place, we're able to really hear the beginning stages of the evolution of this band, as they go from playing together to playing as a cohesive unit. Perhaps they've felt solid for a long time, as they well should -- but whatever's going on with this next crop of songs we're hearing is really starting to translate off the stage and out into the crowd for a tangible, can't-deny kind of shift. We're particularly swooning over -- if the set list was in order -- a ditty called "Darker Blue Bayou," a track that was so good that the people behind us in the crowd were trying to discern what mega-band wrote it and how great the Young Evils were for choosing to cover it.
You don't have to take our word for it -- you can catch that heady new-music buzz for yourself, and do some good while you're doin' it: The Young Evils will be playing at the Crocodile this Friday {tomorrow!} with The Redwood Plan, and Land of Pines {holy lineup, Batman!} as part of the 2012 series of Noise for the Needy shows. These fundraiser shows have been going on around town since June 1st, and on top of the Young Evils show, there's still plenty left to catch. The NFTN gigs are going on through this Sunday, and you can catch up on what's left of the calendar the official site here.

If there's one lady in this city who's earned a Wonder Woman cape, it's Lesli Wood. For as long as TIG has been around (reminder: 10 years!), Lesli has been a part of Seattle's most noteworthy bands.
I remember the first time we saw her in action. It was with Saeta at the Sit and Spin in 2002. It was a completely dark room, with Saeta's sublime, flowing songs filling the space. Lesli lit up the stage with her beautiful vocals and heart-wrenching piano melodies… and her imaginary fanclub was formed.
Since then she's lead the way in Seattle's music scene with not one, but two more amazing bands: Ms. Led (r.i.p.) and The Redwood Plan (currently ruling the streets). She was even a mentor on an episode of MTV's "Made" (in which she illustrated *extreme* pose, compassion, and patience). And while doing all this, she's been a practicing attorney. The lady totally deserves a superhero cape!
If you heart Lesli as much as we do (which we *know* you do), mark your calendar for the next Redwood Plan show on Friday, June 8th at The Crocodile with Seapony, Land of Pines and Young Evils for the Noise for the Needy Benefit.
We heart Lesli for so many reasons. She's talented, kind and she's been gracious enough to take part in many an imaginary party (and rocked them all). Remember her performance of "Divorce Song" at our Exile In {Imaginary} Girlville Liz Phair cover night back in 2008 (video below)?!
